I've scored the early Saturday morning truck driving gig on a permanent basis now, it's only right when you consider that I have done it every Saturday (and some Sundays) for months on end now.
I don't mind doing it, I think I'm getting used to getting up at 3am but it does kind of spoil Friday nights as I tend to be trying to sleep instead of drinking/winding down from a bad week in the "proper job".
I'm a pretty reasonable driver now; reversing holds no fear for me any longer and I'm quite happy taking a 7.5 ton through any city centre. My three-point-turn in Turl St is among my favourite maneuvers; I've noticed that a reversing beeper has strange effects on Saturday shoppers, many of them like to stand right behind the truck and listen to it.
I'm such a hardcore (baby) trucker now that I even have my own favourite model of truck; you can't beat a
Daf LF for maneuvering in tight spaces, it has a better turning circle than many cars.
I've been thinking of taking my Class 2 LGV test, I don't want to be a full time driver but it would be nice to have a non-office based "skill" to use should I ever need to lay my hands on more cash urgently.
So, it's going well and I get more satisfaction from delivering a few tons of vegetables than I do from a whole week of proper work. If only I could survive on a truckers salary alone!
