	Friday, August 27, 2004 I'm working from home today and it's going quite well. I'm trying to make a database in MS Access that takes information from SAP and adds more info to it and then transmits the output via a .csv file to be stuffed into another database at the customers site, so far it seems to be working out alright. I find that I can only do this sort of work at home as I generally only have internet access via my 6310i when I am on the road. I'm being helped along by live365.com and, although it's not normally my thing, I sticking to their selection of Hip-Hop which is keeping me going while my head feels like it's going to melt... - Steve, 2:07 PM, Sunday, August 22, 2004 This story won't be a surprise to anyone who travels on our Motorways frequently. I just don't understand why people stay in the middle lane when the "slow lane" is empty, it's frustrating for the people queing to get past and is a danger to vehicles approaching from behind. I'm not a big sports fan but there are plenty of Sports Reports on the radio and they deliberately make them hard to understand. When football players are transferred between teams they often give what I think must be the teams addresses, Joe Bloggs has moved to "Eland Road" or Paul Smith has completed his move to "The Hawthorns", what is that all about? Neither of those are clubs, why not just say "Chelsea" or "Birmingham City" Yesterday the big news was that Michael Owen might leave Liverpool, they were saying that if he played last night then his price would go down because he was... well I'm not even sure what they were saying, it was either "Cup tied" or "Cupped tight". I heard the story several times and they didn't explain what that meant once. - Steve, 12:24 AM, Wednesday, August 11, 2004 It might look like I took this photo at night but it was actually around 9.30 am yesterday on the M6 around Stafford. Storms all the way from the M42 up to Crewe, plenty of cars facing the wrong way up the embankments... - Steve, 7:51 PM, Sunday, August 08, 2004 We went to the local "Toys R Us" this afternoon for a bit of a browse. I'm not a big fan of shopping at the best of times but being in a shop and not actually buying stuff is my idea of Hell, it was unanimously decided that I would wait in the car and amuse myself until we were ready to go home. When it's 30 degrees C outside and really humid, a car with climate control isn't a bad place to spend an hour, especially when you can do a bit of "People Watching". One thing that I found quite unusual was a family of four returning to their car (Toyota People Carrier) and loading it up with kids and shopping, just as they looked about ready to drive off one of the kids (boy of about 6) jumped out and pissed over the front bumper and grille! If that wasn't odd enough, when he got back in an older boy got out and he pissed all over the front of the car! All of this was in a crowded car park. I can understand that small children often get "caught short" but this lot must have been less than 100 yards from the customer toilets in the shop. - Steve, 8:20 PM, Saturday, August 07, 2004 It's been a while since I have done any studying although there have been many occasions when I have nearly started studying... This year I'm determined to make a start, I'm sure that although I don't feel like I have much spare time at present I will be able to have enough time to myself to get some work done. I have picked the course already; I will be having a go at "Certificate in Web Applications Development" from the Open University. I think it will be just right for what I want to get out of it, I'm not in the IT industry but I do have enough interest in the subject to make this level of course enjoyable and the fact that the Certificate is made up of six individual courses appeals to me. I want to study primarily for interest rather than any career enhancement, I can't see me ever being an "IT professional" but I can see that the type of skills I would pick by studying this qualification would be a great help in my current role. The first module starts in October, I'm sure to supply updates as I go along! - Steve, 10:40 PM, I've just started using Flickr. I can think of no better way of trying it out than taking a picture of my Knob and posting it for the world to see. - Steve, 4:01 PM, Friday, August 06, 2004 Smiling banned on passports? I bet it won't be long before smiling in everyday life is banned, you know, just in case the cameras don't recognise you on the street... - Steve, 3:29 PM, I've just realised that I really do sound like a complete Twat while talking on the 'phone. Part of the problem is that I speak at a volume that is much higher than strictly necessary, if there is any background noise (at either end of the conversation) then I tend to over compensate for it and make matters worse. I also call everybody "mate", something that I never do in real life and find a little annoying when other people do it all the time. I could concentrate each time I make or receive a call and make sure that I'm more "natural", or I could stop recording parts of my 'phone conversations and get myself a pen and some paper to make notes with. I know the second options won't exactly cure the problem but at least I won't have to listen to myself doing a pretty good impression of a Saarf Landon Geezer. - Steve, 2:16 PM, Thursday, August 05, 2004 I'm on a bit of a roll tonight, it's been a while since I have had enough motivation to update this blog, the content might be crap but it's something! We've been having some weird weather recently, I suppose you can expect it to be hot and humid in August and storms are also a reasonably common occurrence at this time of year, but it's the scale of things that I'm finding out of the ordinary. It's uncomfortably hot and the storms we have had in the last couple of weeks have been much more severe than I have experienced (in this country) for a long time, twice now I have driven through storms where it has been impossible to go more than 15mph. I do love extreme weather and it's not often we get any here... I'm trying to cool down tonight by drinking vodka straight from the freezer, it's not working but I'm starting to not care! - Steve, 10:17 PM, That last post was a little melancholy, I didn't really mean it to be that way; I'm suffering from a prolonged period of "meh" rather than any real sadness or depression so in the scheme of things I'm probably doing alright. One good point is that I am changing my contract at work, I'm moving from a contract with the Oxford based company to a contract with the subsidiary based in the North West, it makes sense as I have been working for them for almost 2.5 years. The reason it's good for me is that I get a new salary and it's higher than my current one by a few £k. The start date is Monday, nothing else changes. - Steve, 10:07 PM, There is something pretty fundamental missing from my life at the moment, if I knew what it was exactly I could at least make a plan of action, you know, concentrate on whatever I need to do to get me where I want to be. Does that make any sense? I don't mean career-wise, more like where I want to be as a person. I'm finding life a mixture of stress during the day and a kind of creeping boredom at most other times, I really want to snap out of it and just do something. I have tended to think that my life (and enjoyment especially) is limited by limited funds, but it could be that the lack of spare cash is just an easy excuse to justify a life that is pretty mundane. If I had a wallet full of cash right now what would I do with it? I'm married, I have a small child, the answer is that I probably wouldn't actually be doing anything at all right now. Don't misunderstand me, if I had my time over again I would still go the marriage and family route, I certainly don't regret it and I'm very lucky to have a wife I love and a daughter who means the world to me.
