I stopped for lunch in a local layby (classy, eh?) next to where a new housing estate is being built. I was watching one of the builders laying bricks near the roof level of one of the part built houses, I was surprised by just how many bricks the guy laid (is that the correct term?) in the 30 minutes or so I was watching. I found myself feeling quite jealous, partly because he was working outside and I was on my way to a badly lit office, and partly because he could see the results of his work taking shape right there infront of him.
It's the problem I have with modern project work, especially large projects, it's hard to gauge the progress being made by the project as a whole and specifically by your own personal input. I need to
see results in a way that I can take in otherwise I just don't get a sense of achievement from it. I suppose this is the reason why I like cleaning really dirty cars, or hoovering a really dusty carpet or gutting long grass, the result is right there at the moment you put the effort in.
