I had planned to write (or vent) my thoughts about the
Fire Brigade strike here, however, a post on
this Blog got me started and I put it in the comments section.
So in true
Blue Peter style, here is a post I made earlier:
Well I must be "namby pamby" because while I do agree that Fire-fighters
deserve a pay rise, I think 40% is ridiculous. The Fire-fighters have
chosen to go into the profession, with the current pay structure, in the
first place. If the wage offered was really 40% too low then why would
anyone ever apply to the Fire Brigade in the first place*? The fact is that
in most areas there are many more applicants than positions.
I believe that £21k is around the national average, depending on the area
you live £21k is an adequate salary to live on. I live in the Midlands, I
earn around the national average and I have a fairly comfortable existence.
The Fire-fighters are holding the public hostage until the government give
in to their demands, if that happens then we'll have the same situation with
Nurses, Teachers, Ambulance Technicians, Soldiers, Council Workers and then
every other member of the employed public.
There are many people who deserve pay rises, few would show this much
disregard for the public.
*The Fire-fighters would probably say that they are in the service to ensure
the safety of the public, if that was the case there would be no strike
action.
